What is an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)?

An ATS is a sophisticated electrical device that continuously monitors the utility power supply. The moment it detects a failure or a significant voltage drop from the main grid, it automatically signals your silent or open frame generator to start. Once the generator is up to speed and producing stable power, the ATS safely transfers the electrical load from the grid to the generator.

How Does the ATS Process Work?

  1. Monitoring: The ATS constantly watches the utility grid voltage and frequency.
  2. Detection: Upon a power outage, it waits a few seconds to avoid nuisance transfers for very short grid fluctuations.
  3. Signal: It sends a "start" signal to the generator controller.
  4. Transfer: Once the generator voltage and frequency are stable, the ATS breaks the connection to the grid and makes the connection to the generator—all within 10 to 30 seconds.
  5. Retransfer: When utility power is restored and stable, the ATS switches the load back to the grid and signals the generator to begin a cool-down shutdown.
