Preventive Maintenance Checklist for Your Diesel Generator
Proactive Care for Uninterrupted Power
A diesel generator set is a significant investment. Protecting that investment requires a consistent and thorough preventive maintenance schedule. Proper Technology & Operation practices not only prevent costly breakdowns but also extend the unit's lifespan and ensure it starts instantly when needed.
Daily/Weekly Checks
- Coolant Level: Check the radiator coolant level and top up if necessary with the correct mixture.
- Engine Oil Level: Ensure the oil is at the full mark on the dipstick.
- Fuel Level: Keep the tank as full as possible to prevent condensation and ensure adequate runtime.
- Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious leaks, loose bolts, or damage.
Monthly Checks
- Battery Check: Inspect terminals for corrosion and ensure the battery is fully charged.
- Fuel Water Separator: Drain any accumulated water from the fuel filter/water separator.
- Air Filter: Check the restriction indicator or visually inspect the filter. Clean or replace if dirty.
Scheduled Maintenance (Every 250-500 Hours or 6 Months)
- Oil and Filter Change: Replace engine oil and the oil filter. This is the most critical routine service.
- Fuel Filter Change: Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters.
- Air Filter Change: Replace the air filter element.
- Coolant Check: Test coolant strength and condition.
Annual/Extended Service
- Coolant Change: Replace the engine coolant as per the manufacturer's recommendation.
- Professional Inspection: Have a certified technician perform a full load test and inspect the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), alternator, and control panel.
Adhering to this checklist will keep your generator, whether it's a silent or open frame model, in peak condition. For complex servicing of brands like Perkins or Chongqing Cummins, always rely on trained professionals.
