Step 1: List Your Essential Loads

Step 2: Calculate the Total Power Requirement (kVA)
Each appliance has a power rating in Watts (W) or kilowatts (kW).
- Find the starting and running wattage for motors and compressors (A/C units), as starting wattage can be 3x higher.
- Sum the running wattage of all resistive loads (lights, computers).
- Add the highest starting wattage to the sum of all other running wattages.
- Convert total kW to kVA by dividing by a power factor (typically 0.8). Total kVA = Total kW / 0.8
Step 3: Consider Future Expansion
Add a buffer of 20-25% to your calculated kVA to accommodate future growth and ensure the generator isn't constantly running at 100% capacity, which prolongs its life.

Assume you have machinery (10kW running, 30kW starting), lighting (5kW), and office equipment (3kW).
Total Load = (30kW starting) + (10kW + 5kW + 3kW - 10kW* for the machine already counted in starting) ) = ~38kW.
Total kVA = 38kW / 0.8 = 47.5 kVA. With a 25% buffer, you would look for a ~60 kVA generator.
